On a successful day for Team Australia so far, runner James Turner was left immensely satisfied after his gold medal-winning effort in the menâs 400m (T36). Turner finished well ahead, but only after pushing himself to the limit towards the end of his race. He clocked 52.80 seconds.
âIâm quite emotional right now,â said Turner after his medal presentation.
âA lot of work has been done by a lot of people to get me here.â
âThe last 50 {metres) of a 400 is always hard â" the heat [in Tokyo] and the effort.
âMy muscles started tightening up, I started losing control of them.
âBut I was able to hold it together with my training.â

He explained his can-do attitude with the following: âI love pushing the limits of what I can do.
âEverything I do is to push the boundaries of what I can do and to show that we can be more than what we are now.â
The emotions were raw for Australian Darren Hicks, who was awarded his gold medal not long ago for victory in 24km menâs time trial (C2). Hicks finished just over one-and-a-half minutes ahead of Belgiumâs Ewoud Vromant.
âI think Iâll be excited later on, but for now itâs just relief,â Hicks told Channel Seven.
âIâve worked so hard for this, and Iâve wanted it for so long.â
âIâm just so happy.â

Gold medallist James Turner had to receive some medical attention after his race, but weâre told it wasnât anything serious or heat related, just to do with his cerebral palsy after an event. He was ecstatic after the race (the menâs 400m T36 event) and could be seen thumping his fists on the ground yelling out in delight. His medal ceremony is coming up and if he wasnât wearing a mask, thereâd be a grin from ear to ear.

Turner burst onto the scene in Rio when he gold in the menâs 800m T36, an event now removed from the program.
âIf I can give confidence to at least one kid with a disability then Iâve done my job well.â
Channel Seven is reporting that the Australian collapsed after his media interview and was attended to by medical personnel, such was his exertion to win that gold.
Jaryd Clifford has reflected on his 1500m bronze medal (T13)t to go with with his silver in the 5000m last week. The Aussieâs time of 3:54.69 was 13 seconds outside his world record he set earlier this year (3:41.34). The marathon awaits him this weekend.
âI knew the 1500m was going to be the toughest event here,â Clifford said.
âBecause the 800m has been taken off the Paralympic program, the 1500m is stacked with guys who are extremely good runners.
âI would have liked to have gone quicker. Iâm the world record holder but theyâre only a second behind me, and if I lead it out, theyâll sit on me and theyâre quick enough to do that.
âI was kind of in a pickle. I donât know. Iâm happy with that, knowing the guys who beat me are both sub-1:50 800m runners and I havenât run many 800m events in my career, Iâm coming down from longer stuff.â
