Jockeys to undergo COVID tests as cloud hangs over Randwick meeting
Racing NSW is dealing with another COVID-19 scare in the Sydney jockey ranks that could threaten The Everest carnival.
The regulator has put in place a series of rapid tests at Sydney Airport on Saturday morning for riders before they head to Randwick after two jockeys stood down. Every jockey riding on George Main Stakes day at Randwick, the official start of the carnival, has been ordered to have an off-site COVID test before heading to the races, where they will be tested again.
Sydney jockeys are all being tested twice before being allowed to ride at Randwick because of COVID scare.
Racing NSW has told jockeys a biosecurity expert has advised it will be safe to continue to race under strengthened measures and any COVID positive would now be picked by a rapid antigen test.
Racing officials are hopeful the George Main Stakes meeting will go ahead. If it does, there are already plans to tighten the COVID protocols for trainers and staff.
The Herald understands the jockeys were informed of the new protocols on Saturday morning after an unconfirmed case in the riding bubble. Jockeys have been split into metropolitan and country bubbles for the past couple of months to lessen the risk of transmission.
Racing NSW has been contacted for comment.
