Billy Slater to be named next Queensland coach after putting pen to paper on Thursday
Billy Slater will go from Maroons legend to Queensland coach after signing a two-year deal to take on the State of Origin role on Thursday.
Slater will be officially announced as the new Maroon coach during a press conference with Queensland Rugby League on Friday morning.
The Origin veteranâs manager George Mimis confirmed his client had put pen to paper on Thursday after weeks of speculation.
Slater takes over from Paul Green who stepped down from the role earlier this month.
The 38-year-old played 31 Origin games over his 14-year Origin tenure.
NSW counterpart Brad Fittler welcomed the pending appointment.

âBilly was a very astute as a player, astute as a commentator, and heâll be astute as a coach,â Fittler said.
Slater became the front-runner for the role after South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett declared he would not be returning to Queensland in 2022.
The veteran coach has been at the Queensland helm in three previous stints, winning the Origin series in 1987, 1988, 1998, 2001 and 2020, while also retaining the shield after a drawn series in 2002.
âIâve told them I wonât be doing it so everyone there knows that,â Bennett told the Herald earlier this month.
