  • Max Gawn is so honest he admitted before the game that he had replayed the first bounce over and over in his head.

His comments raised eyebrows as they are rarely made in the lead-up, more often something a player says six months after the match while reflecting on what went wrong.

After 57 years of heartache, the cruel irony of playing a grand final in Perth, and relinquishing an early lead to be left on the brink of defeat, Melbourne fans were afforded 20 minutes in the final quarter for reality to sink in.

Clayton Oliver spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

I can see it all over your face. We don’t need to say anything, but what is the emotion like down here at ground level?

I don’t know what to say. It’s just unbelievable.

What happened after half-time? The Doggies came out in the second term and kicked six goals, and it seemed they were well and truly on top, but then you guys came out and were unbelievable in the second half.

The first quarter was alright and then we lost our way a bit in the second. We knew they were the fittest team, so we had to out-run them. It is unbelievable, that we came back since the second quarter.

Imagine everybody back home in Melbourne, of your members and fans and supporters who are watching at home on their couches, what do you say to them?

They are doing it tough through COVID, so we have a greater purpose, for Victoria and all the Melbourne fans out there. It has been a long few years, 57 years, so unbelievable.

Christian Petracca spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

How do you sum up this feeling?

I don’t know what to say! I actually can’t speak right now. It feels like a dream. It is quite unbelievable. We set out preseason and the off-season to get this club back to where it should be. For every fan that is what to home, we bloody did it!

Melbourne captain Max Gawn spoke to Channel Seven after the game...

Maxy, you have done it, 57 years - 57 years, can you believe it?

It is a long time coming. My heart goes to everyone in the eastern states at home watching this. I got another special moment, I saw Jake Melksham and Jayden Hunt, some of the hard-luck stories, Majak Daw, pretty special.

So much tragedy, so much heartache and devastation, how much does it mean to you?

Dean Bailey, Jim Stynes, Troy Broadbridge, the list goes on, what Neale Daniher is going through at the moment, these guys are the real heroes, we are just out here and trying to play our role.
