  • The AFL have confirmed the five-person panel to judge the Norm Smith medallist of the 2021 grand final. The panel includes:

    Luke Hodge (Channel 7)

    Harry Taylor (ABC radio)

    Tania Armstrong (Triple M)

Andrew Krakouer (NIRS and Yokayi Footy Show)

    Callum Twomey (AFL.com.au)

In the event of a draw, this procedure will apply:

  • Goal umpires confirm scores are identical
  • There is a six-minute break
  • Teams change ends
  • Three minutes of additional time shall be played, plus time-on
  • At the end of the first additional time period, the siren will sound and teams will immediately change ends without a break
  • The ball will be bounced (or thrown up) in the centre and a further three minutes of play (plus time-on) will commence
  • At the conclusion of this period, the siren will sound and the team with the highest score is declared the winner
  • If scores are still tied, steps 3-8 are repeated until a result is determined
  • Meanwhile, Richard Goyder will be barracking for extra time in the grand final and is hoping for a free-flowing, attacking game.

“I’m a draw person ... I’d love extra time,” he said.

Meg Rankin first went to the footy as a child with her mum, Joan Skerry.

Both are Melbourne Demons tragics. Robbie Flower was an early favourite, Todd Viney a later one.

  • Gillon McLachlan had just spotted Rob Stary in the AFL offices and wondered why a noted criminal lawyer, who’d represented notorious crime figures Carl Williams and Tony Mokbel as well as terror suspects, would be in the foyer in February of 2016.

He wandered over to Stary and discovered that the lawyer, a Bulldogs tragic, was acting for one of that club’s least recognisable players, Luke Goetz, a 202-centimetre rookie ruckman from Altona who had just made what would be his sole appearance at senior level for the Dogs in a practice game at Craigieburn.

“How many weeks did he get,” asked the AFL boss.

When he was 17 and a footy nobody at pre-draft camp, Fremantle asked Max Gawn how his then-girlfriend would handle a move across the Nullarbor. “She’ll be right,” he replied. “Her goal in life is to be a footballer’s wife.”

Twelve years later, he is in all ways a towering figure, the most distinctive and distinguished in the game, but he’s still Max Gawn. On Brownlow Medal night this week, former teammate Jack Fitzpatrick texted him to say he could win the Brownlow, the Norm Smith, and the title of drought-breaking premiership captain, too.

“Don’t forget best-on on mad Monday,” Gawn replied immediately.
