West Australian health authorities are urging people in the Kimberley town of Broome to get tested for COVID-19 if they have any flu-like symptoms after wastewater testing picked up traces of the virus.

The popular tourist town, which is home to a large population of vulnerable Indigenous Australians, has seen an unprecedented spike in visitor numbers since the pandemic drove up domestic travel.

In a statement released on Friday afternoon, the Department of Health said the traces could be the result of an active case nearby, an infected person travelling through the area, or a historical case.

“This unexpected finding does not necessarily indicate there is a positive case in the community,” the statement read.

“However, people regardless of age with even the mildest of symptoms are asked to get tested as soon as possible as a precaution.”

Federal police have served a summons on a 26-year-old man to appear in court next month on a complaint that he raped a woman in Parliament House, clearing the way for a court hearing on allegations made by former government adviser Brittany Higgins.

The police served the summons on the man’s lawyers on Friday to ask him to appear at the ACT Magistrates Court on September 16 at a hearing that could lead to charges being laid.

The police will allege the man raped a woman at Parliament House on Saturday, 23 March 2019.

“The man will face one charge of sexual intercourse without consent. The maximum penalty for this offence is 12 years imprisonment,” the ACT Police said in a statement on Friday.

The move comes almost six months after Ms Higgins went public with her claim that a colleague working with her in the office of Senator Linda Reynolds raped her in the minister’s office on that day.

Chief political correspondent David Crowe has more on that breaking story here.

The ACT has extended its home quarantine orders for people who have been in an additional 14 local government areas in NSW, while ruling out a hard border with the state.

From Friday, anyone who has been in the LGAs, which include including the Hunter Valley and Dubbo, will have to quarantine for 14 days.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said they go further than those included in the NSW lockdown because the territory was taking a conservative approach.

But she said it would be “almost impossible” for the ACT to introduce a hard border closure with NSW

“We know that we have thousands of people around the ACT who need to cross the border for essential purposes on a daily basis,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“We know that our border is for all intents and purposes is a porous border and can’t be closed as a hard border.”

She warned Canberrans who leave the territory that the rules could change at short notice and they could be required to enter home quarantine at short notice.

If you’re just joining us, here’s a recap of what’s making news today:

A man has been arrested two weeks after he allegedly assaulted police officers and pushed a horse in the face at the Sydney anti-lockdown protest.

Strike Force Seasoned, involving at least 22 detectives, was launched after 3500 people gathered in Victoria Park and made their way towards Town Hall on July 24.

More than 60 people have already been charged in relation to the unauthorised march and remain before the courts. A second “freedom rally” did not eventuate last weekend, when police ringed the city and flooded its parks and public spaces.

Officers arrested a 31-year-old man at a home in Ryde, in the north-west, about 6.45pm yesterday.

The man has been charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer during a public disorder, resisting or hindering an officer in the execution of duty, committing an act of cruelty upon an animal and joining or continuing in an unlawful assembly.

He has also been charged with possessing a prohibited drug and a prohibited weapon after police allegedly seized cannabis and nunchakus, or nunchucks, at the home.

The man was refused police bail and listed to appear before Hornsby Local Court today.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested at the property after allegedly becoming uncooperative. She was charged with obstructing or hindering a person executing a warrant and possessing a prohibited drug, and is due to face court on September 1.

Police are also appealing for assistance from the public to identify eight men and one woman who they believe may be able to assist Strike Force Seasoned investigators.

They are also re-appealing for information about three other men, including two captured in images released last week.

Victorian Jobs Minister Martin Pakula understands that businesses need more than four hours notice to lockdown but argues the state government couldn’t afford to delay yesterday’s decision.

“It’s really painful and difficult for businesses who have got to cancel bookings on the day those bookings are going to happen,” Mr Pakula said.

“[But] you don’t want people effectively having a last hurrah, and using that time to [cause] another transmission event.”

Health authorities have provided an “urgent update” for people who visited a shopping centre in NSW’s Hunter region, with 12 stores now classified as close contact locations.

Anyone who visited Charlestown Square on Pearson Street, Charlestown, between 3pm and 6pm on July 29 is considered a casual contact and must get tested for COVID-19 and isolate until a negative result is received.

However, the Apple store, Boost Juice, Cotton On, Jay Jays, Priceline Pharmacy, Glassons, Supre, Factorie, Pearl Nails, Ground Level Newsagency and Guzman y Gomez and McDonald’s in the food court are all listed as close contact venues for specific times within that three-hour period.

Hunter New England Health says close contacts must get tested and isolate for 14 days.

“We continue to monitor the situation and are following all relevant advice and guidance issued by NSW Health with regards to COVID-19,” the centre said on Facebook.

The Hunter, including Lake Macquarie and Newcastle, entered a seven-day lockdown yesterday afternoon.

Trade will continue at Charlestown Square for regular goods and services including supermarkets, grocery stores, liquor shops, convenience stores and newsagents, banks, pharmacies, post offices, medical centres and optometrists.
