AFL 2021 LIVE updates Eagles making Lions earn a top-four spot Bulldogs given some hope
1 of 6
Things are getting very tense in the Brisbane camp. They might be up by 11 points at half-time, but at this stage it’s not enough for them to secure a top-four spot.
The Western Bulldogs are hoping and praying that the Eagles can continue their second-quarter output for the remainder of the game because that will go a long way to them hanging onto fourth position.
Brisbane are on top in disposals 177-161, tackles 34-22 and scoring shots 14-13, but the Eagles have fought back well to lead the clearances 21-18, inside 50s 31-29 and contested possessions 75-68.

Ryan kicks back-to-back goals and now has a game-high three majors to cut the margin to just four points with 3:58 left in the first half, 8.5.53 to 9.3.57.
This has been an incredible turnaround from the Eagles who have looked a lot hungrier and more desperate than the Lions since the hosts shot out to a 29-point lead on the back of seven consecutive goals.
It’s getting worrying for the Lions (131.8) who are now in fifth spot on the live ladder, and a full percentage point behind the fourth-placed Western Bulldogs (132.8).
The double chance is not looking as certain as it once did in the first quarter.
Jones cuts the margin to just 11 points, kicking Brisbane out of the top four. But from the next centre bounce, Neale runs to 50m out and drills it home to put the Lions back up by 17 points, and more importantly put them back in the top four on the live ladder.
There is just 0.1 per cent separating them and the fifth-placed Bulldogs. This could be a very nerve-wracking evening for Brisbane and Bulldogs fans.

To West Coast’s credit, they could’ve easily dropped their bundle, but they’ve kicked two of the first three goals in the second term, via Ryan and Vardy, to cut the margin to 16 points, 5.4.34 to 8.2.50.
Brisbane are still fourth on the live ladder, but they’re only 0.2 per cent ahead of the Western Bulldogs. So if the Lions want that double chance, the Eagles might make them earn it.

It hasn’t taken long for those interstate Eagles to rear their ugly head.
Granted, they are severely undermanned today, but seven consecutive goals from the Lions have seen the hosts quickly take control of this contest.
A goal after the siren from Darling ended Brisbane’s goalkicking spree.
As it stands, on the live ladder at quarter-time, Brisbane are in the top four, which is bad news for the Western Bulldogs.
As the scoreboard suggests, the Lions absolutely blitzed the Eagles in the first term. They’re dominating the disposals 101-72 and marks 29-17, while they also lead the scoring shots 9-6, and contested possessions 34-32.
Incredibly, West Coast are on top in inside 50s 17-14, but the Lions have kicked a goal every second entry.

The Lions have wasted little time hitting back at the Eagles, with four consecutive goals from McStay, Zorko, Daniher and Jarrod Berry putting them up by 13 points at the halfway mark of the first term, 4.2.26 to 2.1.13.
And importantly, Brisbane find themselves in fourth spot on the live ladder, 0.4 percent ahead of the Western Bulldogs.
Brisbane’s bid for a top-four spot has got off to a shaky start with the severely undermanned Eagles jumping out to an 11-point lead after seven minutes, 2.0.12 to 0.1.1.
The goalkickers are Allen and Waterman.
A reminder that the Lions have to win by approximately 4-5 goals to replace the Western Bulldogs in the top four.
